My Artistic Journey

"And I think that's the secret in all things in life. You're going to run into barriers. You're going to run into roadblocks. And if you can feel confident and fearless..."

I'm here at my home, and I'm getting ready to go to work, and I thought I would just stop a second and show you some collages. I love collage, and here are some that I created for me. It was a lot of fun, kind of like a big mess.

And I'd like to tell you one more thing about some artwork I created way back when I was in college. When I was in the live drawing class, my teacher told me, "I think you should try another major." I was a freshman and I always knew I was going to be an artist. I was an artist, and I knew I was going to major in art. I didn't listen to him. Later the next year, he said, I never said that, but he did say that. And I'm so grateful that I had enough self-confidence that I did not listen to him. I knew what I wanted. I knew what I wanted to be. I came into college very naive in the early '70s. I didn't get much art history or art in high school, and so I looked pretty clueless. And guess what? I was. But I didn't let that stop me. I didn't let him stop me.

And I think that's the secret in all things in life. You're going to run into barriers. You're going to run into you know roadblocks. And if you can feel confident and fearless and know that what you want and what you strive for is correct for you. Here's some art I did for that teacher. We had a drawing of a model, and we did the drawing first. I just drew it, then I put it on the Masonite board, and then I colored it. I've always loved this picture. I am going to get it framed eventually, and it's only been well since the '70s, that's not so long.

Anyway, here it is. You can see how it was a very simple drawing. It's kind of confusing because it was a picture of the model, and she was alive, and then behind her are these pilgrims, but they weren't really there. And I actually sold it once way back, and then the person I sold it to didn't pay me. I said, I need that picture back, and I got it back. I'm so grateful for that.

Anyway, be fearless, be brave, know that you are who you want to be, and be that person.
